처음에는 오천원짜리 몇장으로 시작됬다. 맞벌이로 바쁘셨던 부모님은 해가 지고 저녁 늦게 집에 돌아오셨는데 아버지는 이불 옆에 책이 있는 것을 보시면 기특한 마음에 용돈을 책 사이에 끼어 놓으셨다. 그리고 가을이 되면 영어 단어책 사이에 낭만을 잔뜩 품은 단풍을 넣어주셨다. 가장 예쁜 낙엽들만 골라서.

아버지의 정성이 통했는지 어렸을 때부터 책을 많이 읽었다. 자정이 넘어서도 책을 붙들고 있는 것을 보고 할머니가 이제 자야한다고 꾸짖으셨고, 그럴 때면 화장실안에서 숨어 책을 몰래 읽었다. 몽테크리스토 백작을 읽었을 때는 밥도 안먹겠다고 하고 10시간 내내 책을 붙잡고 있던 기억이 난다. 한번 시작한 책은 꼭 끝내야 잠이 왔고, 지금도 그렇다. 그래서 아침에 못 일어나나 보다 (한국예능도 한 몫 한다).

캐나다, 중국, 일본, 프랑스에서 살면서 언어를 배울때도 가장 뿌듯했을 때는 책을 원서로 책을 읽을 수 있을때였다. 해리포터는 물론이고, 유단 교수의 논어심덕, 모파상의 벨아미 등이 기억에 남는다. 특히 논어심덕은 중국 대련에서 학교를 다닐때 여러모로 힘든 하루들을 이겨내게 해준 내게 정말 감사한 책이다.

어렸을때는 마냥 부모님이 오빠와 나의 교육을 위해서 책을 골라주신다고 생각했다. 하지만 지금 돌아보면, 엄마 관심분야가 녹아 있는 책 선점이였다. 우리 집에는 유난히 성경책이 많았고 소년소녀 가장의 이야기, 해외로 이민한 사람들의 이야기들이 많았는데 생각해보면 엄마의 신앙, 이웃을 돕는 삶을 살고 싶어하신 마음, 그리고 외국생활을 하고 싶었던 희망이 다 담겨있는 책장이였다. 이제나마 엄마의 마음을 알았으니 이제 내가 엄마의 꿈을 지원해드리고 싶다.

직장생활을 하면 여러가지 일에 치여서 독서를 하는 습관을 놓치기가 쉬운데, 개인적으로는 Kindle과 Ridibooks로 e-Book을 읽는 것을 적극 추천한다. 실제로 Kindle과 Ridibooks를 알게된 후에 독서량이 엄청 늘었다. Ridibooks없이는 외국에서 한국어 책을 구하기가 참 어려운데 덕분에 지난 몇주 한국어 책만 7권 독파했다. 역사, 전기, 비지니스, 문화 관련된 책에 관심이 있는데 내가 가장 재미있게 읽었던 책들 몇개를 소개하는 것으로 첫 블로그를 마치고 싶다. 혹시 읽었던 책중에 좋았던 책이 있으면 꼭 소개 부탁드린다.

It all started with a few five dollar bills. My parents often came back home late as they were busy at work, and my dad sometimes left pocket money in between books I piled up by my bedside before falling asleep. I also remember him hiding carefully picked out maple leaves in between the pages of my SAT vocabulary book. They were always a pleasant surprise.

In short, his strategy worked. When my grandmother caught me reading past midnight and told me to go to bed, I hid in the bathroom and finished my book. I remember skipping meals and hanging onto Count de Monte Cristo for ten odd hours. To this day, my biggest roadblock against becoming a morning person is a good book (… and who am I kidding, Korean variety shows).

The biggest perk of living in Canada, China, Japan and France was being able to read books in the language they were written in. Harry Potter was the first book I read in English, but Professor Yudan’s Lun Yu Xin De, and Maupassant’s Bel Ami were all good books I had the privilege of reading in Mandarin and French. Lun Yu Xin De in particular got me through tough a few months in Dalian and I am forever grateful to Professor Yudan.

Growing up, I thought that my parents bought books purely for educational purposes. Looking back, books we had on our bookshelf represent my mother’s interests more than anything. We had multiple copies of the Bible, books about children growing up without parents in Seoul, and autobiographies of Koreans who immigrated to the US. I now know enough about my mother to understand that they represent my mother’s Christianity, her hope of one day opening an orphanage and living abroad. It’s now my turn to help her accomplish her lifelong dreams.

There are so many excuses to not read, but personally, buying Kindle and using Ridibooks helped me read so much more. In these past two weeks, I devoured 7 Korean books thanks to Ridibooks. I’m interested in genres like Business, History, Autobiography, Technology and Essays, and I want to share some of my favorite books to wrap up my first ever blog post.
